This is awesome. I found this page a few weeks ago when looking for updated map for NYC Century ride. I rode 2004, 2005 and 2008 editions. So, today I hit it solo and enjoyed nice round trip ride (84 miles) from my home in Weehawken to Croton Reservoir. What a ride!!! I started at noon and had to turn around at the reservoir but next time I try to make to the end. It could be a nice 100-miler;)

Best short section for family might be Kitchawan to Yorktown Heights, crossing the Croton Reservoir. Park in Kitchawan (side road off Rt 100, where path is right next to Rt 100) or I think you can park right in Yorktown Heights where path goes through town. Hello!! I’m planning a trip for my family to go bike riding. I found out that Bike riding is not allowed at Rockefeller state park and found information on North County Trailways. My daughter is 5 1/2 a bike with training wheels. What part of the trails do you recommend? Should we drive up north or stay lower. We are in Bronxville/Yonkers area. I have no problem driving up north, but looking for suggestions more for my daughter since she will be biking it. Then when u provide the information can you provide locations for parking, since we are not taking metro north?

Do you know the locations of parking areas for the South County Trails? I know of one, off Farragut Avenue, but it is often full. Any others further up the trail?

In answer to Joshua and anyone else who is wondering, the trail in Van Cortlandt park is indeed doable on a road bike. I just rode it yesterday, and continued a few miles up the paved trail into Westchester and back again. After all of our rains sections of the trail are a little muddy, but there’s always a hard-packed bit that goes through or around the mud. While most of the trail in the park is surprisingly easy and smooth, there are a few (very few) small bits that need a teensy bit of skill – going over branches or gravel. On the entire dirt trail, however, I only had to put a foot down once and never had to get off the bike. It’s a very very enjoyable ride.

No, they are not yet connected.
But there is a better way to ride between them than is currently shown on http://www.nycbikemaps.com/maps/north-and-south-county-trailways-bike-map.

When riding from South to North, I recommend riding on Vreeland Ave which becomes Hayes St. This avoids most of the route along 9A with heavy traffic.

Joshua – the trail in Van Cortlandt park can easily be done on a road bike. If it has recently rained, then it will likely be muddy and more difficult on a road bike (I usually hop off the bike a carry it around the big puddles)

Anyone know what the trail is like within Van Cortlandt park ? The trail map shows it as dirt within NYC limits, then paved in Westchester. Can this be done on a road bike ? Is it packed dirt (like an old fire road) – or more mountain bike terrain ? Would it make sense to ride streets into Yonkers and then get on the trail ?

I rode it last year. http://blog.russnelson.com/bicycling/1208706870.html and if you click on the map you’ll get a gmaps mash-up which shows you exactly where I went. I parked in the store’s parking lot at the southern end. Plenty of room (because the government forces them to build for the one or two days when the lot is full and the rest of the year that much extra earth is covered with pavement) if you park at the far end near the trail.

I’m an old hand at riding these trailways, but checked the site a few times to plan a ride for yesterday that left the trail in Mahopac, where I’m least familiar with it. Excellent work!

You ought to add at least a few more train connector routes to the map. The descent from the path to the Croton Falls train station (via Croton Falls road), for example, is fantastic, though I wouldn’t want to climb it. Also perhaps a route from the Mount Kisco train station, either via 133 or Crow Hill Road.
