2009 Five Boro Bike Tour: Sunday May 3rd
Apr 28th, 2009New York’s Five Boro Bike Tour is the largest recreational cycling event in the United States. Every year on the first Sunday of May, over 30,000 riders participate in the 42 mile ride around New York City. The route, closed to automobile traffic, takes riders through all five boroughs of New York City, across five major bridges, and finally across New York Harbor on the Staten Island Ferry. It is a lot of fun for cyclists of all skill sets and highly recommended.
Register early ($48 before March 13), as they sold out last year almost a month in advance.Sold Out Please check the comments for those trying to sell or find tickets.

Hello,
Looking for a last minute ticket for tomorrow’s ride. Would be happy to pick up at start or any where along route. Please call me at 610-960-5999.
Need to get to Penn Station by 9 am. Where can i cross over to west side from upper east side 84th st to avoid bike race?
What a freaking joke
Let them get wet. ha ha..
Hope you all enjoyed yourself.
At the least, you seriously inconvenienced thousands of people who were unable to get from one side of city to the other for miles, with no posted information or access.
For those like myself, with disability, you caused expense, time, financial loss,
and aggravation.
Information on impact of this ride on NY’ers should be posted all over (that one must be strong enough to walk miles to find a street where one can cross town, and psychic enough to know which streets will be open).
If those who read this think it is funny: perhaps one day you too will be older or in poor health or have a disability or lack of adequate funds. People couldn’t get to jobs; people couldn’t get to events they had paid for.
An event of this nature should not be allowed if it is not going to be conducted in a manner that will anticipate and respect all the people upon whom it will have such a deletrious impact.
Ruth – Sorry to hear you were inconvenienced. For future reference the 5 Boro Bike Tour is the first Sunday of May every year. Signs were posted days in advance warning of the road closures.
Ruth,
While I would be right there with you arguing why society HAS to provide handicapped access to all NYC buildings and on all NYC buses, taxis, subways and other forms of public transportation, I also request you and others to have the same tolerance in return.
The annual bike tours are a way for society to have a just one day tolerant for bicyclists and everyone should sacrifice and accomidate cyclists us as we tolerate the cars, trucks and others who in my opinion treat bicyclists as 2nd class citizens with no equal rights to the roads, see http://www.ghostbikes.org/new-york-city
Every year, cyclists are killed on our streets needlessly because a delivery truck decided to park in a bike lane and create a dangerous situation or a cab had to run a light to get to his destination 5 minutes faster. I am sure that I speak for many cyclists that just want equal access to our beautiful city and equal consideration as citizens.
While I mean no disrepect to the elderly whatsoever, give us our 1 day to enjoy what we do. When I am on a bus and a person is on a wheelchair, I gladly am in no hurry whatsoever to accomidate all persons in society and proudly stand behind everyone and believe that the handicapped should have equal access. I ask that you be tolerant in return and make the same sacrifice that others provide tou you.

YOU REALLY DON’T NEED A TICKET. I DID IT LAST YEAR AND AM DOING THIS YEAR TOO. JUST BRING YOUR BIKE AND BE THERE AND IT’S ALL COOL. SEE YA’LL THERE…
THEY CAN’T STOP YOU FROM RIDING ON THE STREET BECAUSE IT’S PUBLIC PROPERTY AND IT’S OFF LIMIT TO AUTOMOBILES NOT BIKERS…
LAST TIME I HAD A LITTLE GROUP OF MINE OWN AND WE JUST RODE AROUND THE WHOLE TOUR…
I have 1 ticket, i got called into work last second and can’t use it…718 8466711 -Stefanie
They should do more of these bike tours. Maybe it will get more people to ride on bikes and get a bit fitter. It is strange to see how come some people never went on a bike their whole lives. Having said this, it has been a few years since I last rode a bike.
“I have 1 ticket, i got called into work last second and can’t use it…718 8466711″

It seems a little silly to me that you need a ticket to a bike riding event. As Dean points out above [although why the shouting?
], they can’t stop you riding on the streets. Still it’s great that the city closes the roads to cars.
